The historical farm of Oude Libertas, established in 1689, is now the home of Distell. The property was acquired by William Charles Winshaw, the founder of SFW (now Distell), in 1924. The Libertas range was introduced in 1992; it takes its name from the Libertas homestead, (built in the middle of the 19th century), which stands on a small hill overlooking Distell's headquarters.

The grapes come from several vineyards in the Coastal and Western Cape regions. Within this area, there are a number of different meso-climates, each with its own distinctive climatic and geographic conditions; there is also a wide variety of soil types. This broad selection enables our winemakers to maintain and improve the style and character of the wines over the different vintages, and has earned for Libertas a reputation for excellent value for money.
